Middle Ear Infection: Overview

A middle ear infection, also called “otitis media”, is an infection of the middle ear. It is a common complication of respiratory viral infections such as the common cold. In such cases, the middle ear becomes infected, and a bacterial cause is common. Ear infections are common in children, but become less frequent in adults. Typical symptoms are fever and ear pain, with other symptoms such as ear discharge, irritability, and other symptoms. Since the patient often already has a fever from a respiratory infection (e.g. common cold, flu, throat infection, etc.), the hallmark symptom is ear pain. Typical treatment is with antibiotics and pain relief medications. In severe cases, ear drainage may be required.
