Neuropathy: Overview

Neuropathy is a general term for a disorder of the nerves. Neuropathy may affect many different nerve systems: peripheral neuropathy, autonomic neuropathy, digestive neuropathy, and other types. Neuropathy may result from nerve diseases, nerve entrapment disorders, metabolic disorders, alcoholism, nerve injury, vitamin deficiency, medication side-effect, and other causes. Neuropathy is a common long-term complication of diabetes, which may result in diabetic peripheral neuropathy (e.g. tingling toes), diabetic gastroparesis, diabetic diarrhea, and other types of diabetic neuropathy.
