Stroke: Overview

A stroke is a brain event that is a medical emergency. If you are concerned that you or someone with you may be having a stroke, you need to call for emergency medical help immediately. A stroke is caused either by bleeding in the brain or by a blood clot or blockage of the brain. Treatment usually consists of immediate emergency treatment, followed by ongoing treatment after the event to address any complications and prevent a recurrence of another stroke.
