Breathing Difficulty Overview

Breathing difficulty, also called “dyspnea”, refers to any kind of difficulty with breathing, including any pain or discomfort on breathing. Although it can have simple causes (e.g. poor physical fitness, cough), it is also often a very serious symptom. The severity of breathing difficulty may range from mild breathlessness (e.g. breathless after exercise) to severe “shortness of breath” or even to acute respiratory distress and respiratory failure. Any form of respiratory distress requires emergency medical treatment. Read more about: Shortness of Breath, Breathing Symptoms
